Pupils at St Chad’s Catholic Primary School in Witton Park, Bishop Auckland enjoyed a full day of exciting and meaningful activities as they celebrated the 100th birthday of Sir David Attenborough and learned more about his life, work and passion for the natural world.

Throughout the day, children took part in a range of activities inspired by Sir David’s work. Pupils watched snippets from his documentaries, helping them explore the beauty of the natural world and understand the importance of caring for the environment. They also created eye‑catching posters with the message “Save the Oceans”, encouraging discussion around conservation and protecting our planet.

Children also spent time reading about Sir David Attenborough’s life, learning why he is such an important and influential figure. These activities helped pupils develop curiosity, respect for nature and a deeper understanding of environmental responsibility.

In Class 1, pupils marked the occasion by creating a beautiful birthday card to send to Sir David Attenborough, featuring pictures of their favourite animals alongside thank‑you messages. As part of their PE lesson, children enjoyed moving like different animals, discovering that some movements – especially pretending to be a caterpillar – were particularly challenging but great fun.

The day concluded with pupils joining a live assembly, linking up with hundreds of other schools. Children were especially excited to take part in a live assembly with Steve Backshall, making the celebration feel even more special and memorable.

The celebrations ended with pupils agreeing that Sir David Attenborough is a truly important person who has inspired generations to learn about and care for the world around them. It was a wonderful day of learning, creativity and celebration at St Chad’s Catholic Primary School.
